AERATION

WHAT IS AERATION?

Aeration is the mechanical process of removing small plugs of soil from your lawn.  There are several major benefits to core aeration which are listed below:

  • Allows the flow of oxygen, water, nutrients, and fertilizer down to the root level

  • Loosens compacted soil

  • Promotes deeper and stronger grass root growth

  • Assists in drought resiliency and water reabsorption during drought

  • Facilitates seed-to-soil

  • Minimizes water runoff and increases absorption

  • Promotes grass seed germination rate

  • Helps keep thatch under control

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED AERATION?

Sustainable Stewards recommends aeration at least once a year (Spring or Fall) to promote a healthy lawn.  Lawns that see high traffic due to pets, children, or gathering areas are recommended to have aeration services twice a year to maintain a healthy lawn.

Aeration should be completed during the growing seasons, Spring and Fall, to promote vigorous root growth.  A great time to aerate is if you are planning to complete a yearly overseeding.  The soil cores assist in grass seed germination by allowing the seed to make contact with the soil by either entering the soil core hole or the soil core itself!
